My Personal Research Journey

My topic for the simulation is the effect of punishment on children.  I have always been told that there are consequences for your action and that punishment helps to make children better in the long run.  I want to see evidence that shows that this is true or false.  I would also like to know the short term and long term effects of different kinds of punishment.  I realize that research on this topic might have only targeted particular nationalities or ethnicity so I might not be able to make generalizations based on the research I find.  This simulation process has been enlightening and it has confirmed and disproved some of my beliefs to a certain extent.  I would be interested in anything you might come across that is related to this topic.  I would also be happy to share any articles, pertaining to your research, that I may come across.

  1. Hi Karina, This sounds like a fascinating subject. I have been a trainer for several years, teaching teachers about classroom management. Part of what I do is help teachers find better ways to change behaviors than using punishment. I hope you include some alternate methods for managing consequences in your study.

  2. Karina,

I agree with Michelle that this an interesting subject. As someone who deals with the reprocussions and results of punishment towards kids my first advice to parents is to look up the definition of both punishment and discipline.

  3. I think there is definitely an abundance of research pertaining to both negative and positive effects of punishment on young children. So I guess it really depends on your own viewpoints on the subject that will push you in the right direction. It definitely seems like it would be a very rich and interesting topic to delve into!

  4. I believe that this is a great research topic, and one that would have an abundance of mixed opinions. At first, I admit I was taken back by the idea of "punishment" . As an early childhood educator, we are swayed away from the word "punishment" and and we utilize other words such as classroom management etc. Parents, however, utilize punishment, and I think this topic could be rather exciting to delve into. Do you have a particular opinion or viewpoint that you are leaning toward regarding punishment? I look forward to following you and your discovery process, best regards.
