The organization I selected is International Child Resource (Institute International Child Resource Institute, n.d.). Its website can be found at http://www.icrichild.org/ourvision/. The organization has five goals which it focuses on: early childhood care and education, children’s rights, empowerment of women and girls, maternal and child health and grassroots community development. This organization believes in protecting the rights of all children, This includes protecting them from abuse and enabling them to live safely and have stable lives. They believe all children should have the opportunity to have a high quality early childhood care and education. Early intervention is vital to not only children but communities. They believe in the empowerment of women and girls as this can have a positive impact on a community. They believe that in order for women and children to do well they need to have access to healthcare, this will eventually lead to the wellbeing of the entire community. Lastly, that want all communities to have the resources to get out of poverty but they want those community to also be self-sufficient, able to sustain themselves with their own resources. They have ongoing projects in different countries all over the world (Institute International Child Resource Institute, n.d.).
One issue that caught my attention was that there seemed to be a cycle of violence against youths in Nepal (International Child Resource Institute, 2014). Youths were often on the receiving end of violence from their families, schools and communities. When they grew up they would often become the perpetrators of violence. This is quite worrying. Recently, ICRI consultant Melanie Jones, founder of Speak to Children, and volunteer Giulietta Pezzaniti visited ICRI's Nepal office to train 28 Nepalese teachers to address different issues including the one mentioned above (International Child Resource Institute, 2014).

Hi Karina, This website interests me as I discovered a lot of information about refugees this week. To go along with your post...We have a growing population of refugees in Idaho. A lot of them are women and children, and all are coming from situations of persecution or trafficking. The Mountain States Group, a local organization, works with these women to teach them English, a skill, and sets them up with employment, housing, and health care. The goal is to teach these women to become self supporting. This organization works closely with Early Head Start and the schools to ensure that refugee children receive a quality education. Karan Tucker, the CEO of Mountain States Group told me that currently there are 32 different languages being spoken in the Boise School District.

Karina,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post. I found the website interesting as well. It is worrisome to hear that the children of Nepal is the target for violence by their family, school, and community. We are always talking about the violence our youth is going through in the United States, but hearing that these children own families target them for violence is very frightening. In Chicago, we have a growing population of minorities from all parts of the world as well as refugees. A early childhood program who I interviewed for the previous course serviced family and children who are refugees. These people lived in jungles and trees trying to escape to get to the U.S. for a better chance of living. It is really sad and reading others post allows me to have more awareness about what is going on globally in early childhood.
This site seems interesting and highlights many issues that affect children and families . Especially in looking at the cycle of violence in Nepal, in which today's victims become tomorrow'w perpetrators. I really enjoyed your post.
ReplyDeleteFrom what you have stated here it seems like the violence in Nepal is just a cycle that will continue with the children being abused if there is not an organisation or program in place to make a difference. Though cycles are difficult to break it is not impossible. It would be interesting to see Nepal in years to come, and if there was any change.
ReplyDeleteWow! Violence with youth is always a big issue and I think any organization that has found ways to deal with this or created programs to assist with these programs is a doing a remarkable job. It is very great what Melanie Jones is doing and how she is helping to get teachers involved and active with helping young adults with different issues. Our communities and the individuals involved have to take a stand and work against the different negative issues we face everyday. Great Post
